Modern testing for modern stacks

We have gotten into the habit of thinking deeper about one topic on a weekly basis. We pick topics based on anything interesting we read - so the topics can range from 'how to express the value of testing' to 'Dieter Rams' design principles' to 'effective remote work habits'. Employees are guided to spend no more than one hour researching the topic online. The emphasis is on coming up with their own ideas and interpretations. We then meet as a group to exchange ideas. I love this habit and consider it one of the more unique benefits you will enjoy at Qxf2.

Topic: What is your learning style?

Each of us has a unique learning style. Figure out your learning style. Limit your thoughts to how you currently learn not-how you wish you learned things and how you think other people learn. Please refrain from using Google for this topic. Spend a couple of hours examining how you learn.

Our thoughts

Arun

I like learning topics in an unstructured manner. Text books don't cut it for me. I like attacking problems multiple times over long periods of time. I am comfortable with leaving problems unanswered. I absorb information in very small pieces.I like multiple sources.I like combining ideas from different fields. I like to be working on multiple ideas in the background.I try to figure out higher level principles involved behind every small thing I learn. I imagine explaining the topic in plain English to a non-technical person.I usually learn a little bit and then take long breaks (like months) to process the information. During the long break, I like forming my own theories and guessing where the topic theory is likely going to grow.I try out things to prove or disprove.I like walking when thinking.I keep notes and collect sources when learning. I hate having to remember things.I concentrate on the words being used in a space

Like to learn in a structured manner. Like to start from Basics or refresh my basics Usually once i get a good information from one good source tend to stick on to it. Like to finish some things and then move to next things, don't like jumping to next topic Try to clarify concepts clearly before trying out Not good at remembering things need to refresh if i need to do it again Recently I tend to like seeing video more to learn stuff faster Dont like group studies. I take bit time in processing the info and then tend to form my own ideas and search for logic

Usually, I read the contents related to the topics and i try to understand how it works,or how can i implement this. I will try to study from the basics of the particular topics. Make notes of everything whatever I am learning. The good way to learn new things is by making mistakes-when i get some error according to Arun's advice should make notes of it,why the error, how to rectify it,what are all the different possibilities,so when i get the same error one more time it's easy to debug . Usually, what i do is if i read or learn new topic,I Google it,but i don't stop by one search,i try to search in different ways,so that i will get clear idea about it. If I find any difficulty in learning any new topics,I try to make more questions and find the solutions for it and also i try to pretend that i am explaining to someone else.

I go through the resources that have been given to me. I take notes and also create a sequential process or images as andwhen required. I speak to the person who's been through this, ask questions and get some more inputs. Apply the theory, give an example and put it into use.Try and learn to relate to the past experiences or outcomes.Discuss with others and prepare yourself as you would train others

Usually, I like to watch videos. So, I prefer to watch videos/lectures for learning new things. Learning by watching video gives me a practical taste of thing. Mostly I prefer to watch videos on coursera, edx, youtube etc. I always took notes while learning new things, which save my time to revise the things later. If in case, I will not get any good quality videos, then I will go for reading blogs, articles and books. I prefer to start reading from background of topic which gives me basic idea/flow of topic then I will go to the roots of topic in structured manner and do practical work simultaneously if topics related to any kind of tutorials. I feel flexible to learn any technical stuff. Mostly I adopt the things which I like during any discussion or during reading any articles.

My learning style conform to Levy's flight pattern. I don't confine myself to particular topic. I try reading anything i find interesting as i go through my timeline on Twitter. I value the conversation i have during reviews or other discussions. It shows me where i need to improve myself. I try to help my friends to solve problems. It helps me revisit a few topic that i knew already or start with something i do not know. I recently picked up the habit of going through something i learnt recently after sometime. i find something new that i did not notice before. The time in between allows me to learn something new that would be related.
